Save Kips Bay AMC Theaters

The Eleanor Roosevelt Independent Democrats joined the campaign to save the Kips Bay AMC by organizing a rally with elected officials and community partners on September 20, 2026. The message was clear: Kips Bay residents want the AMC theater open!
What we know today:
NYU-Langone is in contract to purchase the property at 570 2nd Ave
The movie theater has been notified that its lease will be terminated
NYU-Langone did not notify local officials of their purchase nor have they given clear indication of what purpose the building will serve
It is generally expected that NYU-Langone will expand medical and office space (not hospital capacity) into 570 2nd Ave as they have done across Kips Bay and Murray Hill
As we and our local officials continue to push NYU-Langone for answers and a meeting with the community, we want to hear from you! Please share your thoughts about the cinema and whether you have ideas on how NYU-Langone can serve its mission while also honoring community needs.

Our rally to Save Kips Bay AMC Theater will be held tomorrow at 12 pm, RAIN OR SHINE! We expect dozens of community partners and residents to gather to tell NYU-Langone that they must work with AMC to keep a theater at 570 2nd Avenue.
Recent action have included a letter from elected officials to NYU demanding answers.
