Save Kips Bay AMC Theater
UPDATE: OCTOBER 7, 2026
The Eleanor Roosevelt Independent Democrats joined the campaign to save the Kips Bay AMC by organizing a rally with elected officials and community partners on September 20, 2026. The message was clear: Kips Bay residents want the AMC theater open!
And now, our rally is getting a response! An NYU representative will be at the Community Board 6 Health, Education and Environment meeting on Thursday, October 8 to discuss the university's plans and hear feedback from the community. Our representatives, Keith Powers, Virginia Maloney and Kristen Gonzalez, will also join the meeting.
While the meeting is held in person, space is very limited! We encourage everyone to attend via Zoom. Visit the CB6 website for additional details.
Date: Thursday, October 8
Time: 6:30 PM

Here are the basics of what we know today:
- NYU-Langone is in contract to purchase the property at 570 2nd Ave
- The movie theater has been notified that its lease will be terminated
- NYU-Langone did not notify local officials of their purchase nor have they given clear indication of what purpose the building will serve
- It is generally expected that NYU-Langone will expand medical and office space (not hospital capacity) into 570 2nd Ave as they have done across Kips Bay and Murray Hill
As we and our local officials continue to push NYU-Langone for answers and a meeting with the community, we want to hear from you! Please share your thoughts about the cinema and whether you have ideas on how NYU-Langone can serve its mission while also honoring community needs.
